International Day for Persons with Disabilities
Today, December 3rd, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), and the 2025 theme is powerful: Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.
At the Open Doors Towards Work programme, we believe true inclusion lies in the power of all. Hence, this theme is a direct call to action—not just for governments and employers, but also for you as a person with a disability to recognise your immense value and potential.
We see your skills, your resilience, and your determination. The job market needs your unique perspectives, problem-solving skills, and life experiences. Don't let perceived barriers or past rejections diminish your drive.
Focus on what you can do and remember that reasonable accommodations exist to bridge any gap. There are dedicated services out there. Reach out, you don't have to navigate this alone!
Your journey is a strength. Overcoming daily challenges has built a level of perseverance and adaptability that is valuable in the workplace. Your difference is your advantage.
Keep applying, keep learning, and keep advocating for your right to meaningful employment!
To Government and Employers
To truly achieve a "disability-inclusive society" that drives "social progress," we must remove the systemic obstacles that keep the employment rate for people with disabilities in Ireland unacceptably low. The commitment is there, but implementation must be accelerated.
- Expand and Simplify Supports Promote and simplify access to key schemes like the new Work and Access programme (Workplace Adaptation, Wage Subsidy Scheme, etc.) as requested. Make it easier for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to access and utilise this funding.
- Lead by Example Ensure the public service employment target for people with disabilities is not just met, but exceeded, to set the standard for the entire country.
To our prestige employers, see the opportunity, not the barrier. Hiring people with disabilities isn't just a matter of corporate social responsibility, but a legal and smart business strategy.
- Focus on 'Ability' Shift your focus from perceived limitations to the skills and contributions candidates can bring. Diverse teams are proven to be more innovative and productive.
- Champion Accessibility Proactively offer reasonable accommodations from the interview stage onwards, understanding that many supports are low-cost or covered by government grants. The Work and Access scheme provides funding for assistive technology to disability equality training for staff.
- Engage with Supported Employment Partner with organisations like the Open Doors Initiative and AHEAD to find pre-screened, motivated candidates and get expert support for successful integration.
Let this International Day be the catalyst for real, transformative change. Let's work together to make an Ireland where every person, regardless of ability, has the chance to thrive and contribute to our shared social progress.
Happy International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
